Help Us Feed The Community

The Community Kitchen Project will continue our mission to feed the community and host events with community meals in order to develop relationships with women along the continuum of addiction. As a recovery community, eating together is integral to building relational infrastructure. These regular meals with supportive community members increase the relational/social network of women rebuilding their lives from the aftermath of SUD.

Desens House has been hosting events throughout the community with the goal of providing a safe space for women with Substance Use Disorder as well as recovery allies and community members to learn, grow and thrive in a safe environment. Each event is an opportunity to build new relational bridges, over a meal, with community members that are caring and supportive.

Over the last year, we were able to serve more than 1,200 meals to the community!

Our meals are cooked in collaboration with: women from the community, women from a local homeless shelter, women with SUD, women with sustained sobriety and recovery allies. Cooking together each week has become a way to check in on each other as we share family recipes and food histories.

Being surrounded by a community of supportive new friends while eating a delicious free meal can be the first step toward change. In this space, surrounded by women further along the continuum of recovery, there is the possibility of hope. Over meals we regularly see phone numbers exchanged and new relationships form. These relationships will enable new pathways as new "people, places and things" are exchanged for old habits.
